Such degradation is very different from what we find in Nightwood. When Matthew dons women's gowns, it is not to engage in sadomasochistic, ritualized behaviors. In fact, as Nora describes it, the image becomes one of considerable power and strength: "Is not the gown the natural raiment of extremity? What nation, what religion, what ghost, what dream, has not worn itinfants, angels, priests, the dead; why should not the doctor, in the grave dilemma of his alchemy, wear his dress?"
